JEDI B-Mitzvah
The Mile End Chavurah B Mitzvah class is a year of learning and growing in relationship to Jewish tradition, the Mile End Chavurah, and the peer group. The group ceremony in May will be an opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate this learning in front of the child’s community!
The group will meet weekly from October to May for a 2hour learning session, at a time chosen based on the availability of the students and teacher.
In addition to the weekly class sessions, families are encouraged to participate in Mile End Chavurah community events such as Kabbalat Shabbat.
The curriculum
Core elements of the educational program are:
- Building a caring community in the group
- The diversity of Jewish life, particularly across denominations, places and times
- Social justice, and particularly Jews and social justice in Montreal's history
- The meaning of the Shabbat morning service
- Creating a tallis and/or kippah for use in the B Mitzvah ceremony and beyond
- The role of Torah in Jewish tradition, and preparing a Dvar Torah for the B Mitzvah ceremony
- Leyning/chanting Torah for the B Mitzvah ceremony
- Connection to the Mile End Chavurah community, including through volunteering. This will likely include cooking for a community event, running a kids station at a holiday celebration, and/or teaching a class for younger students.
Class content can be adjusted based on the interests of students and families! The registration form will include space to share any educational priorities, which will be incorporated into planning for the year.
We encourage students who have not had exposure to Hebrew, to begin learning to read the alphabet prior to joining the program. If your child is interested in having a B Mitzva with Mile End, and they need help with Hebrew prior to our start date in October, please be in touch.
