JEDI After School Program
“I wish JEDI was more than once a week!” - Gr 3 student
In our warm and fun community, kids explore Jewish life – from local Jewish history to Torah stories to tikkun olam, to Jewish art history and more.
“Normal class” schedule:
- 4:15 - Snack: Kids gradually arrive, are greeted by their teachers, get a snack and catch up with their friends.
- 4:30 - Peula: Main lesson, planned based on the current program-wide unit. Lessons focus on experiential learning, discussions, and artistic creation.
- 5:20 - Ivrit: The Givolim (gr 3-4) and Prachim (gr 5-6) work through the beautiful B’Hol Ot Hebrew workbook at their own pace, with support from teachers. The Shorashim (gr 1-2) are introduced to Hebrew letters and vocabulary through crafts and activities.
- 5:40 - Shira: All ages come together to learn a new prayer or song, either in preparation for an upcoming holiday or to lead a community-wide Kabbalat shabbat.
In addition to normal classes, we have one or two “special days” per month – kids are put into mixed-age groups for creative holiday celebrations, field trips, guest speakers, and more.
When:
We meet on Tuesday evenings 4:15-6pm. The program runs from September to May. Families are also encouraged to come to a handful of events outside of regular class time, which are communicated throughout the year.
Who:
The program is open to students in grades 1-6. Currently, students are organized into three classes: Shorashim/roots (gr 1-2), Givolim (gr 3-4), Prachim/flowers (gr 5-6).
We aim to be inclusive to as many families as possible. Some families in the program are Chanukah-only cultural Jews, and others keep Shabbat every week. Many are interfaith, and/or multi-racial. We teach a wide variety of Jewish customs, particularly by including Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Mizrahi content. If you have questions about whether the program will be a good fit for your family, please reach out!
